Transport

The vast majority of Pathfield pupils travel in Devon County Council funded transport (minibus or taxi) although a small number arrive by private car or travel independently.

Information on Devon County Council website states: – There is no automatic entitlement to transport assistance for children who have a Statement of Special Educational Needs or an Education Health Care Plan.

There is a duty to provide assistance with transport to the nearest primary school where the distance from home to school, measured by the shortest available walking route, is more than 2 miles for a child under the age of 8, and 3 miles for a child who is 8 years of age and over. Devon has exercised discretion and agreed to provide assistance with transport to all primary aged children who live more than 2 miles away from the nearest or designated school deemed to serve the home address.

There is also a duty to provide assistance with transport to the nearest secondary school where the distance from home to school is beyond walking distance (walking distance is defined as 3 miles). Devon has exercised discretion to also provide transport to the designated school serving the home address.

A child’s statement (see Part 4 of the Statement) or Education Health Care Plan will name a school. Where a school is named in accordance with parental preference and is not the nearest suitable school, nor the designated school for the home then there is no obligation for the Authority to assist with transport.

If you wish to make an enquiry regarding entitlement to free or assisted school transport please phone Devon County Council on: – 0345 155 1019.
